Marybelle Marrero-Colón is the Associate Director of Professional Development Relations at the Center for Applied Linguistics. She began her career thirty-eight years ago within the field of Bilingual Special Education at an inner city school in Brooklyn, New York. She specialized in content area instruction for dually-identified students and provided bilingual diagnostic educational evaluations. She became an inclusion specialist in Special Education and Bilingual Special Education programs in New Haven and New Britain, Connecticut; Rochester and New York City, New York. Marybelle served as a MS principal for the Caribbean Preparatory School in Puerto Rico. Marybelle was a PD Specialist on a U.S. Department of Education – Title VII Grant that serviced fifteen middle and high schools in New York City. She provided workshops, curriculum development, SIOP implementation initiatives, and budget allocations. She also acted as a parent liaison for selected districts. Marybelle was one of the founding educators for the Urban Assembly NY Harbor School, a small maritime/college preparatory public high school. Here she developed and coordinated both the English Learner and Special Education Programs. She oversaw the school’s state and federal compliance for ELs, provided professional development, and represented the English learners in the school leadership team. Marybelle has a B.A. in Psychology and Spanish from Pace University, an M.A. in Bilingual Special Education from Hunter College – CUNY, and an M.S. in Administration and Supervision from the College of New Rochelle with a specialty certificate in professional development. She is also a U.S. DOE Title VII Fellow.
