Biography

Dr. Kris Nicholls has extensive experience in all areas of English Learner and Dual Language Immersion (DLI) education. Kris was the Title III co-lead and Dual Immersion Coordinator for the Riverside County Office of Education and established its Long-Term English Learner Task Force and Riverside County Seal of Multiliteracy program. Dr. Nicholls has collaborated with the California Department of Education on its English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC), the state's ELD assessment. She has also collaborated with the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) on reflection tools based on the Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education, 3rd Edition. Dr. Nicholls is the former Director of Professional Development for the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE), where she led a team of biliteracy and English Learner consultants in supporting DLI and English Learner programs throughout the state. She is the CEO of Nicholls Educational Consulting, providing customized consulting and professional learning, both in-person and virtually, across the US and internationally on English Learner and biliteracy programs for districts, administrators, and teachers. She has published “From Subtractive to Additive: Transforming Your Transitional Bilingual Education Program to Dual Language Immersion: A Systems Approach,” “Fulfilling the Promise of Biliteracy: Creating a Successful and Sustainable Secondary Dual Language Program,” and “Building Upon Students' Linguistic Assets Toward Biliteracy: A One-Year, Month-by-Month Planner to Implement a Dual Language Immersion Program: A Systems Approach. Dr. Nicholls is also the Bilingual Program Coordinator for the Teacher Education Program at UC Riverside.
