The topics that will be explored include forming a collaborative, shared leadership DLI transformation team; determining the DLI program type, program model, and implementation model; recruiting/interviewing DLI teachers; retaining/recruiting students, identifying curriculum and assessments in English and the partner language; developing a DLI student academic/language development reflection system; and a DLI program reflection system for continuous program improvement.
Abstract:
With the growing interest in dual language immersion (DLI) programs, districts, and site administrators often do not have a background in DLI education or planning a DLI program. As a result, these programs often get off to a shaky start, which affects students, families, and communities, as well as the teachers who teach in them and the administrators that support them. In this presentation, a step-by-step process, based on the “Guiding Principles for Dual Language Education, 3rd Edition,” to plan and implement a successful DLI program over one year and the systems necessary to sustain the program will be shared. The topics that will be explored include forming a collaborative, shared leadership DLI transformation team; determining the DLI program type, program model, and implementation model; recruiting/interviewing DLI teachers; retaining/recruiting students, identifying curriculum and assessments in English and the partner language; developing a DLI student academic/language development reflection system; and a DLI program reflection system for continuous program improvement. A one-year, month-by-month plan to accomplish the goal of creating a strong and successful elementary DLI program will be shared.
