Emergent bilingual students learn English every day through different experiences. In schools, students learn English in every classroom regardless of the content being taught. Teachers can facilitate this process by engaging students in culturally responsive practices that build oracy and literacy practices. Aldine ISD, with over 60,000 students, 45% of which are Emergent Bilingual students, is creating opportunities for students to grow their academic skills through art and literacy connections. In this presentation, the district shares how these experiences can help students grow in language, socio-cultural competence, and advocacy for themselves and their communities.
