We explore the language ideologies of Mandarin pre- and in-service teachers regarding Chinese varieties and their roles in the L2 class. Participants struggle with characterizing Chinese language, dialect, variety and “fangyan” but become more sophisticated through exposure to sociolinguistic information through educational experiences. Implications for educators, parents, and policy considered.
