Presentation Title:
State Seals of Biliteracy and Cultivating Biliteracy at Every Level: Examples from a Multilingual California
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Bilingual Education
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
There has been a renewed focus and investment in multilingual education across the nation. In California, this includes the Multilingual California Alliance Project (MCAP), a 3-year grant connecting experts in multilingual education, county offices of education, and institutes of higher education, in a collaborative effort to better serve our students and to create a truly Multilingual California. This session will share learning and resources from MCAP’s powerful collaboration, for schools to understand, cultivate, recognize, and advocate for biliteracy.
Abstract:
This session will be facilitated by presenters from the Multilingual California Alliance Project (MCAP), a collaboration funded by the CA EWIG EL Roadmap Implementation Grant.
We will explore the implementation of the State Seal of Biliteracy and other local recognitions of the many pathways to biliteracy in our communities. Examples from our MCAP partners will include the California State Seal of Biliteracy (and corresponding programs in almost every other state), California’s new Biliteracy Pathway Recognitions available for a wide range of program models from PK-12, and San Diego State University’s launch of a new University Seal of Biliteracy and Cultural Competency - now in its third year and with a handbook available as a model for other institutions.
After seeing concrete examples at various levels and in diverse program models, participants will be provided with resources to explore similar recognitions in their own communities.
