Presentation Title:
An Overview of Cultural Frameworks Towards Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy in Bilingual Education
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Cultural Competence
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
Bilingual education is intrinsically related to culture. Culturally sustaining pedagogy is a newer and essential framework with important implications in the bilingual education classroom, especially for English learners and other minoritized students. This presentation will provide a historical overview of different cultural pedagogical frameworks, including those that have influenced culturally sustaining pedagogy. Additionally, the audience will gain curricular and instructional strategies in relationship with culturally sustaining pedagogy to better support bilingual education students.
Abstract:
Paris (2012) introduced culturally sustaining pedagogies (CSP) as a newer cultural framework explaining that there was a need for deeper cultural implications for our minority communities, especially English-learner students. Unlike previous cultural frameworks, CSP has important implications for curriculum and instruction in bilingual education due to its linguistic components in its framework. However, in order to understand CSP, it is necessary to study previous cultural frameworks that have influenced CSP and identify how CSP expands them and contributes to bilingual education. Therefore, this presentation first operationalizes the concept of culture, then, provides a historical overview of seminal frameworks such us Banks’ four levels of integration of multicultural content (Banks & Banks, 2016), including those upon which CSP originates such as funds of knowledge by Gonzalez et al. (2006), culturally responsive pedagogy by Villegas (1991), culturally relevant pedagogy by Ladson-Billings (1995), and culturally responsive teaching by Gay (2002). This presentation will finalize by analyzing the concept of CSP and will provide the audience with curricular and instructional strategies to support bilingual education students.
