Presentation Title:
Supporting Dual-Identified Learners With Disabilities Through Translanguaging
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: ELs
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
Students in U.S. schools have all too often been categorized into subgroups not accepted by as part of general education. Should students be identified as ELs with a disability, they are further categorized creating a deficit, and separatist, approach. Translanguaging, through its flexibility in language practices, enables educators to adjust the language/literacy/cognitive load of dually identified students to meet and support their needs and strengths. This session will identify the benefits of using translanguaging in the classroom with students identified as needing both special education and English learners services.
Abstract:
Students in U.S. schools have all too often been categorized into subgroups not accepted by as part of general education. Should a student be identified as an EL student with a disability, he/she is categorized even further creating a deficit approach. Both academically and linguistically dually identified students demonstrate varying abilities which need to be supported through unique and adaptable methodologies. Translanguaging, through its flexibility in language practices, enables educators to adjust the language/literacy/cognitive load of dually identified students to meet and support their needs and strengths.
Translanguaging represents an approach to language instruction that affirms & leverages students’ diverse and dynamic language practices. As pedagogy it means that the teacher is aware that the linguistic capabilities of the students go much further than classroom language practices. A teacher’s careful planning and integration of translanguaging, combined with the knowledge of each student and their IEP goals and objectives allows educators the flexibility to address areas not pre-planned, nor predicted, as needing additional support. The use of translanguaging contributes to a learning experience that allows students to drive the lesson, while still meeting the prescribed instructional goals.
This session will identify the benefits of using translanguaging in the classroom with dually identified students in need of EL and Special education services. Attendees will participate in small group/paired discussions, a jigsaw reading, and share-outs. Participants will leave with tips and ideas of how to incorporate translanguaging into lesson planning, developing successful classroom groupings, and providing accommodations.
