Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Indigenous Language
Presentation Delivery Language: Spanish
Description:
This work seeks to increase the Indigenous knowledge of intercultural bilingual teachers who work with indigenous Latin America populations. This ethnographic work explains the difference of a communal election not carried out by vote, rather by merit and social recognition. The Indigenous leader Varayoq will be discussed. Likewise, this ethnography seeks to expose the intersection between the political symbolic role and the communal identity affirmation since the figure of the Varayoq is recognized through various annual traditional celebrations. Finally, this paper exemplifies ethnographic work as a tool to approach communal knowledge in favor of an intercultural and multicultural pedagogy.
Abstract:
Under the vision of addressing interculturality, bilingual educators in Peru have the task of knowing and recognizing communal Indigenous knowledge to apply interculturality in their own teaching practice. This work seeks to increase the Indigenous Knowledge of intercultural bilingual teachers who work with indigenous populations in general, and in particular with Andean communities. Beyond the view of Indigenous knowledge, as an artifact fixed in a historical time, this ethnographic work analyzes the current and historical political figure of the Varayoq that is still practiced in many Andean communities, such as the Ccatccapampa community (Cusco, Peru). The speakers will expose the Varayoq as a figure that represents communal knowledge for the indigenous social organization that coexists with the republican social organization. This ethnographic work will also explain the difference of a communal election not carried out by vote, rather by merit and social recognition. This Indigenous practice survived colonial knowledge. Likewise, this ethnography seeks to expose the intersection between the political symbolic role and the communal identity affirmation since the figure of the Varayoq is recognized through various annual traditional celebrations. During this presentation, two celebrations: Alcalde Chayamuy, and Chaka Chutay, will help the bilingual intercultural teacher to recognize the current valid meritocratic image of Varayoc. Finally, this paper seeks to motivate the bilingual teacher to consider the use of ethnography as a tool to approach communal knowledge in favor of an intercultural pedagogy.
