Abstract:
This presentation highlights a transformative shift in a private Japanese university's English language curriculum, where a dynamic English as a lingua franca (ELF) pedagogy has been seamlessly integrated with learner-centered STEAM-based approaches. The innovative approach emphasizes the holistic development of language students, fostering their confidence as ELF learners. Through the incorporation of translanguaging and multicultural practices, students now take ownership of their non-native English abilities.
In the past, traditional language learning often focused solely on grammatical structures and rote memorization, leaving students ill-prepared for real-world communication. However, this new ELF approach has revolutionized the learning environment. By emphasizing the use of English as a means of effective communication and understanding among diverse language backgrounds, students gain valuable practical skills that extend beyond the confines of the classroom.
Moreover, the integration of students from different departments mixed together enriches the language learning process further. Students now engage in a wide array of cross-disciplinary projects, collaborating with peers from various fields. This multidimensional approach encourages critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. By discussing complex topics in English, students cultivate their discussion skills, broadening their intellectual horizons.
The results of this paradigm shift have been astounding. Language students have reported a remarkable surge in confidence, both in their language abilities and their capacity to participate actively in discussions. Participants can takeaway ideas to incorporate their institution by transcending linguistic and cultural boundaries and enabling students to explore new perspectives to embrace English learning in a significantly meaningful way.
