Presentation Title:
10 Effective Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Strategies
Presentation Options: Virtual
Presentation Strand: ELs
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
Emergent bilinguals currently make up about 10% of the US K-12 student population, and this population is expanding very quickly (NCES 2022). Educators must meet the needs of EBs and ensure their success. However, it is well documented that both preservice and in-service teachers feel unprepared to teach emergent bilinguals in their classrooms (Correll, 2016). This creates a demand for teacher education programs to better prepare teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse students. In this presentation, the presenter will share 10 effective culturally and linguistically responsive strategies for teachers to use with diverse students in their classes.
Abstract:
Emergent bilinguals (EBs) currently make up about 10% of the US K-12 student population, and this population is expanding very quickly (NCES 2022). Educators must meet the needs of EBs and ensure their success. However, it is well documented that both preservice and in-service teachers feel unprepared to teach emergent bilinguals in their classrooms (Correll, 2016; Darling-Hammond et al., 2002). This creates a demand for teacher education programs that better prepare preservice teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse students (Nieto, 2000). One way to achieve this aim is to implement both culturally and linguistically responsive teaching. Culturally responsive teaching emphasizes using students’ cultures in teaching and learning and encourages students to develop “a broader sociopolitical consciousness” (Ladson‐Billings, 1995, p. 162). However, teachers need more than culturally responsive to successfully use diverse students’ linguistic resources and help students achieve academic proficiency in English (Lucas & Villegas, 2011). The concept of the linguistically responsive teaching (LRT) framework is based on the idea of scaffolding (Wood et al., 1976) and Vygotsky’s (1978) zone of proximal development, where teachers help the student accomplish tasks they could not do alone. Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching leverages and utilizes the cultural and linguistic learning tools that diverse students bring to the classroom. In this presentation, the presenter will show the audience ten quick strategies to successfully implement culturally and linguistically responsive practices in their classrooms.
