Lau v Nichols (1974): 50 Years of Legacy in Education, Language Access, and Civil Rights
Submission Type: Featured
Presentation Options: Onsite Presentation
Description:
The year 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the landmark court case Lau v Nichols (1974), in which a group of Chinese students with limited English proficiency filed a lawsuit against the San Francisco Unified School District for failing to provide them meaningful access to education. The case expanded access to bilingual education and established language access as a civil rights issue at schools and beyond. Session attendees will receive content and frameworks to teach about the Lau decision as a civil rights victory in education and language access. The presentation will also cover ongoing gaps and opportunities for advocacy.
