Abstract:
This paper presents a research study called Project GIFT (Gifted Identification for Todos). The goal for this project was to address the underrepresentation of Latinx bilingual students in Gifted and Talented Programs in schools in the south Texas. Although there is an array of factors that contribute to this underrepresentation, one dominant factor is the identification process. This project aimed to provide educators, parents, and other stakeholders with necessary information concerning the gifted characteristics unique to Latinx bilingual students. One approach was to create a scale to assess the gifted characteristics for Latinx bilingual students. This scale can then be used as a screening tool in the identification process. The scale was then used to inform and engage educational stakeholders in the identification process for gifted programs. This study examined educational stakeholders’ responses to an informational session on the unique characteristics of giftedness in Latinx bilingual students.
