Abstract:
This (symposium) a panel from leading scholars, aims to dismantle racial and linguistic injustice to reclaim Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) through a theoretical grounding for transforming DLBE to be spaces of equity by focusing on decolonial, nepantlera and raciolinguistic ideologies, theories, and practices (Garcia, et al., 2023). Despite three decades of policy and practice in the U.S., much of the discourse about bilingual education has been framed in defense and against monolingual, assimilationist discourses. This symposium reframes DLBE from a critical stance to construct a research-based alternative discourse and set future directions for critically and pluralistically grounded research. Scholars from across the country will discuss the current state of knowledge, overview of trends, issues, research, applications to policy, practice, and future directions in DLBE.
