Presentation Title:
Promoting Positive Math Identities by exploring our Math Identities and those of our Multilingual Students
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Mathematics
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
This interactive session will engage learners in exploring and describing their mathematical identities. In small groups, participants will create their own math identity graphs using a graph, picture, or words to model their mathematical identity over time. Participants will engage in conversations investigating the connections between the ways in which we teach math and our own math identities. We will discuss fixed mindsets vs growth mindsets in the math classroom and the connection to math identity. Participants will leave the session with resources and ideas of how to support multilingual students in developing positive identities as mathematicians.
Abstract:
Our purpose for this session is to engage learners in exploring and describing their mathematical identities. Participants will investigate the connections between the ways in which we teach math and our own math identities. Participants will leave the session with resources and ideas of how to support multilingual students in developing positive identities as mathematicians. Math identity refers to the dispositions and deeply held beliefs that individuals develop about their ability to participate and perform effectively in mathematical contexts and to use mathematics to change the conditions of their lives. A factor that plays into one’s math identity is mindset - growth mindset vs fixed mindset. Students with growth mindsets tend to have better math grades and test scores than students with fixed mindsets. During the session participants will be invited to discuss ways in which our identities have been shaped by educational experiences in both positive and negative ways. Next, participants will use diverse learning partner strategies and use guiding questions to investigate the connections between the ways in which we teach math and our own math identities. Next, we will view videos of a student over time (across 4 years) and discuss the changes around the student’s math identity. Participants will then create an action plan for getting to know the math identities of their students. Participants will read an article and work with diverse partners to discuss fixed mindsets vs growth mindsets in the math classroom and plan for ways to foster growth mindsets in their classrooms.
