Presentation Title:
Developing language through culturally responsive art and literacy connections
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Art/Music
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
Emergent bilingual students learn English every day through different experiences. In schools, students learn English in every classroom regardless of the content being taught. Teachers can facilitate this process by engaging students in culturally responsive practices that build oracy and literacy practices. Aldine ISD, with over 60,000 students, 45% of which are Emergent Bilingual students, is creating opportunities for students to grow their academic skills through art and literacy connections. In this presentation, the district shares how these experiences can help students grow in language, socio-cultural competence, and advocacy for themselves and their communities.
Abstract:
Culture is a big factor in classrooms with emergent bilinguals because students have to do more than just learn to respect their classmates’ cultures to get along; they need to understand who their friends are and where they are coming from on different issues and art is the perfect place to start that conversation. Because the culture that many students experience at home and in their communities is not always represented at school—or is represented in a stereotypical way, art classrooms can provide safe venues that can propel the use of new language. Language and art can complement and assist each other because when a concept is not clear in its written form, the visual form can assist the learner with comprehension and expression. Through the ages art has been a means of visual expression used to convey a wide spectrum of tangible and intangible ideas, and it can also support language acquisition and development through the introduction and use of different levels of vocabulary to learners of a second language.(Yale New Haven Teachers Institute, 1981). In this presentation Aldine ISD, with over 60,000 students, 45% of which are emergent bilingual students, is creating opportunities for students to grow their academic skills through art and literacy connections. In this presentation, the district shares how these experiences can help students grow in language, socio-cultural competence, and advocacy for themselves and their communities.
