Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Bilingual Education

Description:
What is translanguaging? How is translanguaging defined? How do bilingual teachers’ experience with translanguaging change their thoughts about the use of it in our classrooms? The purpose of this qualitative research study will be to interview bilingual teachers in one urban Public School District who embraced translanguaging in their classrooms. This study will give us perspective on how translanguaging is seen and used and the benefits and challenges when embracing translanguaging in a public-school bilingual classroom. These teachers will be asked a series of questions to answer the three research questions
Abstract:
The concept of translanguaging came from a Welsh school system trying to teach Welsh while students responded in English. Instead of seeing this as a problem they turned it into a positive pedagogical strategy. Translanguaging is going beyond the boundaries of the name language and making use of our entire linguistic repertoire not one language at a time. Many people have a fear of doing it out loud however we still do it in our heads all the time. Bilingual teachers embracing translanguaging in an urban setting will support students to be bilingual, will increase student comprehension, this will encourage students to collaborate using their languages, and invite students to read and write in home language resources. Translanguaging will increase familiarity of a topic, increase the confidence of the students, and increase reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in both languages. The purpose of this research was to interview bilingual teachers in an urban public school setting, and see why they are embracing translanguaging and how they are doing it. As a researcher, I want to increase use of this positive, pedagogical strategy that all bilingual teachers should be embracing in their classrooms.
