The Parent Leadership Academy is a district initiative that empowers parents of emergent bilingual students by providing classes in SEL, decision-making, and continuing education. The Parent Leadership Academy will share their experiences and the impact this has had on their families.
Abstract:
Parent involvement has long been considered a necessary factor for the academic success of students (Guerra and Nelson, 2013). Our district has over 60,000 students, 45% of which are emergent bilingual students. The district understands that in order to fully support students, we must also support families, especially the ones that are learning a new language. As the district's demographics continue to change and become more diverse, so do the value orientations that families bring to the educational system and its community. "Individualism- the orientation most valued and reinforced in schools- is not the orientation held by all students and parents (Guerra and Nelson, 2013)", but a collective perspective brought by the blending of many new cultures to the district. In response to this collective need, the Parent Leadership Academy in collaboration with a leader in this area, responds as a district initiative that empowers parents of emergent bilingual students by providing classes in: Social-Emotional Learning for Families and Parents, Parental Sacrifices as Part of the Higher Education Process, Fostering Trust, Desicion Making and Responsibility, Methods of Communication to Increase Parental Involvement, Empowering Parents to Complete Their High School Education and Financial Literacy.
In this session, members of the Parent Leadership Academy share their experiences and the impact this new learning has had on their personal growth, and as they support their families.
