Participants will engage in a collaborative learning environment while interacting in activities designed to afford structured conversations and written responses. We will discuss high yield instructional strategies that teachers can use in their classrooms to embed leveled speaking and writing opportunities to enhance academic growth for emergent bilingual students.
Abstract:
Participants will learn and apply expressive language strategies while engaging in structured speaking and writing activities that promote ownership for Emergent Bilingual students.
E – Explicitly Model - Demonstrate the expectations of talk. Teachers will model how to effectively conduct structured conversations, so EB students can access content and engage in clearer conversations.
X – Extended Time - EB students need the time to interact in an academic setting in order to generate their oral and written responses in English.
P – Peer Collaborations - It can improve academic performance for emergent bilingual students by providing them with access to different perspectives and ideas, leading to deeper understanding and enhanced critical thinking skills.
R – Responsibility and Ownership- Can be achieved by engaging in self-assessment, actively participating in class, managing their time effectively, and collaborating with peers. Emergent bilingual students increase their cognitive skills by asking questions, contributing to group discussions and offering their own perspectives on academic topics.
E – Engagement and Accountability- It can help teachers to create a culturally responsive learning environment. By valuing and celebrating students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds teachers can create a sense of belonging and respect in the classroom.
S – Sentence Starters - Sentence starters help students to build their vocabulary, improve their sentence structure, and develop their language skills.
S - Scaffolds for Writing and Speaking -These create a more equitable and inclusive learning environment. They can level the playing field for students with different levels of English
