Description:
I was a member of a national educational institution that particiapted with over 25 locals across the United States. Each participant was asked to create action project. The project I sought to take on, was how to promote multilingualism in our schools to help build and foster community in Title 1 urban school setting, in a very diverse neighborhood of Queens, NY. This project examines my journey, and strategies that I have learned and created over the years to help promote community, by using multilingualism.
Abstract:
I started off with an essential question of: "How can I promote community in my school, using multilingualism?"
My intentions for asking this question are to explore ways in which schools can adapt to a growing population of multilingual students, understand its benefits with parent outreach and student engagement. Another goal is to generate ways in which we can promote a growth of multilingualism with our colleagues to be better prepared to meet the challenges of this changing demographic.
The lack of parental engagement in my school lead me to seek alternative ways to reach out, and envelop these reticent parents to become more involved. As well as, making students feel more comfortable at the secondary level to take risks and have little fear of failures and mistakes. Their languages need to be celebrated and not feared, and if their teachers have the tools necessary to understand their culture and can learn their languages, we can then be the ambassadors of the change we seek to advocate for.
