Communication and culture are critical components of developing bridges between culturally and linguistically diverse families in rural communties in order to reduce communication barriers. Participants will gain an understanding of how the Family Engagement Team in a rural, southern, school district creates and preserves multilingual spaces in schools and communities so that individual voices and members of multicultural communities can be heard by recognizing the role of communication and culture in family engagement.
Abstract:
Discover how the Family Engagement Team in a rural, southern school district supports students and their familes by incorporating world language education and cultural awareness through community organizing. Participants will discover how the team recognizes the interpersonal components of language and cultural connection while striving to help students thrive in an internationally competitive society by generating advancement opportunities that highlight linguistic and cultural expertise and community engaged teaching. Participants will learn ways in which rural communities may recognize the way languages and culture enrich, enliven, and deepen conversation and are an essential component of family engagement and participatory decision-making.
