Session Presenters: Whitacre, Michael, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Musanti, Sandra, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Orozco, Jose, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

In response to the actual bilingual teacher shortage, we share findings from a mixed methods study to better prepare pre-service bilingual teacher candidates to enact culturally and linguistically inclusive pedagogies to support bilingualism, to enhance language competencies in Spanish needed to advance biliteracies, and to develop resiliency and agency to persist in the program and achieve bilingual teacher certification.

3. Sociocultural dimensions of Multilingual Learners: Connecting Research to Practice

Session Presenter: Naiditch, Fernando, Montclair State University

Connecting research to practice is a challenge for school districts that feel the pressure to ‘mainstream’ emergent bilingual learners. In this presentation, I will discuss how research can inform bilingual instruction and how linguistically responsive principles can serve as a tool to develop and sustain best practices for multilingual learners.
