Language is complemented by other semiotic systems such as music, visual art, and dance. These semiotic systems can combine in multimodal ways to create art. Some say art is what makes us human (Morriss-Kay, 2010), yet artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to perform what were once thought of as uniquely human tasks (Peng & Ratnavelu, 2024; Sánchez-Jara et al., 2024). Art has been central to many endeavors to rectify injustices in the world. To extend, artistic citizenship is the process of using art to make the world a better place (Elliott et al., 2016). Leveraging artistic citizenship and critical consciousness are key to these endeavors and bilingual education (Author, 2023; Palmer, 2019). The arts represent the pinnacle of human creativity and are central to many endeavors to rectify injustices in the world. This session demonstrates how to develop artistic citizenship and critical consciousness through artificial intelligence and the arts including music, visual arts, and dance multilingually. The arts offer multimodal, multilingual, and multidisciplinary pathways to understanding, which can impact primary, middle, high, and university schooling contexts. Participants will experience the artistic expression of students who leveraged AI and used traditional creative techniques to leverage their artistic citizenship and critical consciousness. We will leverage AI tools such as Canva, Mureka, OpenArt, Claude, and GoEnhance among others to create artwork to rectify social injustices. Participants will gain a theoretical understanding of how technology, like language, is a tool that fosters learning and development (Verenikina & Gould, 1998; Vygotsky, 2012).
