Abstract:
Who are heritage learners? Why do teachers need to think and teach differently? Heritage learners in highschool language classes have a variety of skills and knowledge in their prior languages. Motivating heritage learners to not only use their language, but continually improve their skills is essential. Designing an effective and engaging class for heritage learners requires understanding current research. This session will provide an overview of considerations teachers need to be aware of when working with heritage learners. Project ideas, forms of assessment, and specific classroom strategies and recommendations will be given. Preparing students for Biliteracy Seal will also be discussed.
