Abstract:
Students are able to activate prior knowledge when they are emerged in content-rich curriculum focused on their native language, cultural backgrounds and individual identities. The purpose of this presentation is to share valuable insights, student voices and pragmatic curriculum which has been implemented across communities in the state of Texas. It presents a series of pragmatic strategies for administrators and educators to empower Newcomer and Emergent Bilingual students by connecting the school curriculum with student's lived-experiences. This session is dynamic, interactive and highly informative as it reports on work-done with Newcomer and Emergent Bilingual students across 70+ high schools in Texas.
