Abstract:
Guidance from the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice requires schools to identify the number of ELs in advanced educational settings (English Learner Took Kit, 2015). It is imperative that we not miss the advanced potential of students solely based on their English language proficiency levels. While the inclusion of Emergent Multilingual Learners (EMs) in Gifted and Talented (GT) education has been highlighted in recent years, there is still much to do to close the identification and service gaps. Learn about alternative identification, service options, pilot programs, watch groups, and how to utilize your EM and GT educator teams in this journey for equitable and appropriate identification of EMs for GT services and advanced programming. The impact of making a few small changes in your process can make a large difference for your students and promote equitable services. Harnessing the power of EMs academic abilities has the potential to create societal change, influence the civic mindset, and open the door to future generations of EM students.
