Description:
A Diverse Learner teacher created and published culturally relevant literature for use in a one-way dual language special education classroom. To promote culturally relevant short stories and foster an understanding of diverse themes in the special education setting, the teacher drew inspiration from her own cultural background to craft the stories and promote diversity, uniqueness, and acceptance. Using literacy to express students' feelings about their experiences in the chosen themes proved beneficial. This mode of expression facilitated open conversations and encouraged the students to embrace differences among people, warming their hearts in the process.
Abstract:
In a dual-language classroom, promoting sociocultural competence and understanding students' cultures is crucial. To achieve this, teachers and administrators must recognize the significance of students' identities and cross-cultural competence. A Diverse Learner teacher in Chicago took a proactive approach by creating and publishing children's books that celebrate the cultural backgrounds of her students. The teacher's books embody cultural relevance and diversity through their illustrations, character names, and addressing pertinent issues. The use of culturally relevant literature has yielded positive outcomes in the classroom. Students are more engaged, and their understanding of issues directly affecting them has improved significantly. For instance, in the book "El cabello de Gregorina,” the main character faces challenges with her and learns to embrace and deal with her unique identity. The story imparts essential lessons about differences, acceptance, inclusivity, and equity. It emphasizes the importance of feeling good about oneself and appreciating the diversity of others. The second book in the series is bilingual (Spanish and English), promoting a positive message across cultures. The vibrant illustrations complement Gregorina's lively and spirited approach to life in her new home, Chicago. As she adapts, she discovers hidden strengths and skills, making it an empowering allegory for children of all ages. The story's universal themes transcend cultures and generations, inspiring young readers who may struggle with a sense of belonging. In summary, these books not only celebrate diversity but also instill valuable lessons of acceptance, self-empowerment, and understanding among students, making them better prepared to become global citizens.
