Presentation Title:
Incorporating Students’ Primary Languages in ESL Without Overuse of Translation
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: ELs
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
Communicating an additive approach to language learning is possible and essential for effective English as a second language program implementation. Even when instructing in English, educators can leverage each student’s primary language proficiency to support English language acquisition. A common pitfall is overuse of translation, but this only provides immediate perceived benefit and does not effectively support acquisition. Join this interactive, practical session that provides methods for effective use of students’ primary languages in ESL.
Abstract:
In this session, I will demonstrate with clear steps on how to accept students’ primary language responses (oral and written) and then to scaffold to the language of instruction (English in an ESL setting). Particularly, I will show how to do so when the teacher does not speak/read the students’ primary language(s). One goal will be to break the habit of falling into the pitfall of overuse of direct translation by and for students, shifting to more effective use of primary language knowledge in acquiring English as an additional language. Participants will engage in activities that practice how to follow the scaffolded speaking and writing processes presented. They will make applications for implementing these methods in their current role as a teacher, paraprofessional, instructional coach, or administrator.
