In this presentation, I share the results from my qualitative research that explored the experience of Massachusetts public elementary teachers with the referral process for ELs to special education. Eight teachers were interviewed as part of this research. Three themes were found in the data; using progress monitoring as an identifier for special education, teachers not heard or trusted, and considerations for home language. At the end of the presentation, participants spend time discussing the referral process at their schools and how they can better support ELs.
