Presentation Title:
The Co-Planning Secret Sauce: Ingredients for Successful Co-Teaching for MLs
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: ELs
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
When teachers co-plan lessons, all students benefit, especially MLs. Join us to learn how an inter-district, job-embedded Professional Development Initiative focused on Co-teaching has grown, and view research on its efficacy. You will leave with ingredients to improve your co-teaching, including tools to evaluate co-taught lessons and resources that boost co-planning efficiency.
Abstract:
Research provides empirical evidence to support collaborative teaching for ELs, grounded in coplanning with a CAN-DO perspective. The trick is getting from research to practice. Developing strategic, easy-to-use protocols can help schools promote effective collaboration as coteaching partners learn together. This workshop proposes to be a “Show and Tell” of how effective coplanning combined with ongoing, job-embedded PD, promotes effective implementation of innovative practices. Effective teacher collaboration leads to more equitable opportunities for multilingual learners.
Workshop Agenda:
- Participants will review our coteaching definition and discuss research showing that ELs of various home languages, grade levels, and proficiency levels grew MORE when participating in cotaught classes for a variety of content areas, K-8
- Participants will learn about the St. Louis Coteaching for ELs Professional Development Components
- Participants view a video of Coteaching and evaluate the lesson using the Coteaching for ELs Six Key Indicators (COTEL6) , a rubric developed for this initiative.
- Participants co-write a lesson using Coteach ELs Lesson Agenda template developed for this initiative and evaluate others’ plans using Questions to Consider.
