Abstract:
According to Echevarria, Vogt, Short and Toppel, Making Content Comprehensible for Multilingual Learners (2023), choice boards that are appropriate to multilingual learners’ ability levels provide additional practice and application activities to develop content and language simultaneously. Learning Outcomes: Choice boards are a powerful tool for engaging learners with content and language. Teachers may be familiar with using static paper format choice boards; however, teachers may not necessarily know how to digitize choice boards with a language and literacy focus. Digital tools can bring the menus to life. 1.Participants will learn how digital language and literacy learning menus gives multilingual learners voice and choice. 2. Participants will explore examples and templates of digital learning menus, such as a simple list of activities, Tic-Tac-Toe, Restaurant Style Menu, and Language Domain Choice Boards. Emphasis will be placed on how to align the digital choice board activities to ML’s language and literacy goals. 3. Participants will gain insight into ways to practically employ digital choice boards while incorporating the three dimensions of language (Discourse, sentence, word levels) and Interpretive (Listening, Reading, Viewing) and Expressive (Speaking, Writing, Representing) modes of communication. Audience Engagement: The session will start with defining language and literacy menus and the benefits for using digital choice boards with multilingual learners. As participants are exploring the various digital templates and examples, the presenter will focus the participants’ attention to the three dimensions of academic language that MLs are practicing and applying in the lesson. The session will end with a Q & A.
