Attendees will participate in, practice, and create adaptations of the “Probable Passage” pre-reading strategy to help multilingual learners build background and interact with grade-level narrative texts. Attendees will leave with a ready-to-use template of a visually-supportive, high-engagement comprehension tool that can be used for gauging students’ comprehension of grade-level texts.
Abstract:
Designed to be a refresher on using graphic organizers as a pre-reading strategy for multilingual learners in the 4-12 classroom, this session uses a schema-theoretic view of reading comprehension to engage attendees in a first-hand experience of using the “Probable Passage” reading strategy in cooperative groups during a simulated content-based reading lesson. “Probable Passage” encourages students to make connections to prior knowledge, their own experiences, other texts they have read, and their knowledge of the world to predict what ideas and concepts may appear in a narrative text they are about to read.
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
- Utilize graphic organizers to efficiently organize information and make connections between ideas to maximize comprehension of text.
- Incorporate pre-reading strategies that lead multilingual learners to become more confident and proficient readers in the content area classroom.
- Teach multilingual learners how to use a graphic organizer to identify key concepts, create connections between ideas, and organize information before reading narrative texts.
- Brainstorm how “Probable Passage” can be adapted for upcoming reading in the content areas lesson.
Attendees will receive a digital copy of the template and process to support immediate use for lessons on reading for information and interpretation.
