From Blueprint to Construction: Building a Campus-Wide CTE Professional Development Program Using a Multilingual Lens
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: ESL Secondary
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
Career and Technology Education (CTE) classes are a great place for literacy lessons as students are presented with authentic texts like technical manuals, computer programs, and blueprints. This session will focus on one campus’ initiative to create a professional development program for their Career and Technical Education teachers focused on supporting emergent bilingual students.
Abstract:
In order to create the best professional development plan for their campus the administration, including their multilingual coach, had to start with a blueprint. Taking the lead from the article, “ Literacy Skills in Career and Technical Education Classes”, the team built their PD plan to fit the needs of their campus. The campus focused on four strategies throughout the year:
- Read and summarize an article - teachers learned to utilize basic graphic organizers that were being used in the content areas, to reinforce student learning.
- Think critically and ask questions - teachers learned how to scaffold academic language in order for students to craft questions properly and engage in academic discourse.
- Reflect on and respond to what they see - teachers learned to use strategies such as sentence stems, cloze notes, and QSSSA in order to support the higher level questions that are included in their curriculum.
- Take a stand and support it with evidence - teachers learned the R.A.C.E. strategy, which is also the same strategy used in the content classrooms on campus, to use with students when asking them to evaluate a problem, devise a solution and present evidence to support their thinking.
There must be a focused effort to support CTE teachers due to the fact that 97 percent of students complete at least one CTE course by the time they graduate from high school “CTE programs are naturally positioned to help students build literacy skills in preparation for future success in college, careers, and life."
