Presentation Title:
Translanguaging behind closed doors: Dual Language Teachers and a Dynamic Bilingualism Approach
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Dual Language/Dual Immersion
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
This study presents the experiences of three Dual Language (DL) teachers in Southern California, focusing on the challenges of implementing translanguaging in their classrooms and the implications for educational policy. A Dynamic Bilingualism approach supports students' fluidity in multiple languages and is essential for effective translanguaging(Garcia & Wei, 2015). Policymakers must address resistance and lack of support for moving towards implementing translanguaging in the dual language classroom. DL teachers call for collaborative policies and practices that support multilingualism, consider power structures, and promote social justice and equity. Implications of this work call for translanguaging strategies in various contexts in dual language classrooms.
Abstract:
This qualitative single case study shares the stories of 3 Dual Language (DL) teachers in the Southern California region and highlights the facilitators and challenges of implementing translanguaging in their dual language classrooms and their implications for educational policy and practice. The study suggests that creating and allowing for a Dynamic Bilingualism approach that is supportive of students’ fluidity of multiple languages and cultures is crucial for implementing translanguaging, given upper leadership support. The use of translanguaging pedagogies and instructional materials that promote and recognize the diversity of students' language backgrounds can also be beneficial. However, challenges such as resistance from stakeholders and policy support for multilingualism and translanguaging must be addressed. Dual Language teachers share strategies and visions for how policymakers and educators can support translanguaging and promote multilingualism in classrooms while considering power structures and promoting social justice in education. Future research should explore how Dual Language teachers utilize effective translanguaging strategies and how it unfolds in different contexts.
