Presentation Title:
Spreadsheet Paleontologists: Unearthing treasures in your EL and LEP assessment data
Presentation Options: Onsite
Presentation Strand: Advocacy
Presentation Delivery Language: English
Description:
Is your data analysis process a tyrannosaurus wreck? We often find ourselves with a wealth of language assessment data, but may struggle to process it in a meaningful way to drive change.
Join us to learn how to sift through your school/district data to unearth a treasure trove of information which can be used to guide student programming and instruction. We will also take time to backward plan solutions and next steps.
Information is applicable to any state language assessment.
Abstract:
A commitment to equity requires a critical approach to data-driven decision making, where stakeholders go beyond student-level data, examining systems that create opportunity gaps (Dodman et al., 2021).
Accountability for English language development is a requirement under ESSA, and schools are held to standards for progress that ELs make in acquiring English. While language assessment data is crucial, additional data points (such as teacher certification and years of experience) can inform leaders and other stakeholders who are seeking to refine practices and programs that support English learners (Samson & Lesaux, 2015).
Data, especially when presented visually, can paint a picture about the needs of a language development program in a school or district. Different charts and graphs can be matched to different data, examined to inform practice, and utilized for advocacy. For example, a histogram illustrating that speaking scores are lower than other domains could inform teachers of the need to examine the testing environment as well incorporate strategies for more student talk into instruction.
In this session, participants will:
- Learn about best practices for data analysis, including its limitations
- Consider what data is available and relevant to ELs, including student language development and demographics
- Accurately represent EL relevant data using different types of charts and graphs
- Utilize findings to identify opportunity gaps and advocate for systemic change
Participants will leave this session prepared to analyze and reflect on their own school/district’s EL and language proficiency data, and will access take-home tutorials to extend their learning, practice, and advocacy.
